The most important things you need to know:
- We do not have any information that identifies you to us. The only things that we will store are a cryptographic representation of your device Hardware ID (HID) and your Wickr ID. We do not require you to share your phone number, email address or name.
- We cannot read your communications and do not store unencrypted messages on our servers. And once they are deleted we cannot recover them. When messages expire on receiver devices, they are forensically deleted and they cannot be recovered by anybody.
- We do not share or sell any data about our users. If you’d like to delete the encrypted information we have about you, please logout from the app, then tap “Erase Account”, and contact us at privacy at mywickr dot com. Because we do not know your Wickr username, please specify it in the email.
What information does Wickr collect and how is it used?
We are committed to limiting our collection of your information to that necessary for the purpose of providing you with the Wickr application.
We only collect information from registered users. Registration with us is mandatory in order to be able to use the basic features of the Application.
User Provided Information – We collect the information you provide when you download and register the Application. To create an account and use the Application, you provide a user name (Wickr ID). Your Wickr ID does not have to be your name or provide a link back to your identity.
Automatically Collected Information – In addition, the Application will collect certain information automatically, such as the type of mobile device you use and your mobile device’s unique device ID. We use this to distinguish your device on our service.
Equally important to us is the information we do not collect. We do NOT collect any location information or have access to the contents of the communications you send using Wickr. Once a message is deleted, our servers do not even “remember” that the communication ever happened.
What information does Wickr share with third parties?
We do not share any user information we have with third parties.
We will only disclose user Provided and Automatically Collected Information under two circumstances: (1) When we are required to do so by law, or have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with state and federal laws, or (2) We believe, in good faith, that it is appropriate or necessary to enforce our Terms of Service, take precautions against liability; protect users from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; or protect the rights, property, or personal safety of users, or others.
Remember, we collect very little information so we have very little information about you to disclose!
Automatic Data Collection and Advertising
Wickr is a free application and does not use any advertising. We plan to offer additional services for a fee in the future that you may choose to use.
Data Retention Policy, Managing Your Information
Content: Wickr servers do not store or keep any of the encrypted messages that you send or receive beyond the time required for your device to download them. All data is stored encrypted on the end users’ mobile devices. You choose your own retention policy by choosing how long a message is saved before it is deleted (via the self-destruct time for sent messages and manual deletion, for your device). Otherwise, we retain data for as long as you use the Wickr services and for a reasonable time thereafter. Accounts deleted by mistake cannot be recovered.
We are concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized employees and contractors who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve Wickr. No information is in the clear, everything is stored encrypted.
However as security experts we know that no security system can prevent all potential security breaches. With Wickr, we have limited the potential implications of such a breach by designing the system so that if we were breached, we have the least information about you as possible.
